Established in 1893, The Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) is the founding ground of golf in Malaysia and the premier Malaysia golf club. Superbly a sanctuary amid the city center, the beautifully landscaped parkland courses command a panoramic view of the Kuala Lumpur’s skyline and are always a joy to play.
The founding members played at another site for over twenty five years before being forced to move to the present location when the government acquired the original estate for use as a public park. Over a ten-year period, starting in 1921, work continued at the new venue – nine holes at a time – until a wonderful pair of 18-hole courses evolved. An abundance of mature trees, lush greenery, and picturesque vistas ensure the golfing experience at the RSGC lives up to its royal heritage.
Extensive renovations to the fairways were carried out after World War II as the Japanese army had used the grounds as a barracks, complete with airstrip, during their three and a half year occupation. Twenty years later, an additional short 9-hole circuit was added, shortly after the club had been granted its Royal status, giving members a fine 45-hole golf establishment.
Home to the inaugural Malaysian Open, the historic Old Course, at 6,742 yards and playing to par-72, provides a memorable journey from the first tee to the 18th green. The Malaysian Open continued to be held at the RSGC Old Course between 1962 and 1986, and then again in 2002.
Recent reconstruction and remodeling by the respected design company of Robin Nelson and Neil Haworth has certainly improved the RBSC with modern day golf challenges with many tactical surprises and strategic course thinking required to score well. Each hole now offers a different golfing experience and challenges one’s golfing approach. Multiple tees ensure that golfers of varying skill levels will enjoy their game. However, the basic routing has till today retained most of its unique characteristics and charm of the original parkland environment.
The RSGC Old Course is strictly walking only. The clubhouse facilities include restaurant, locker rooms, swimming pool, gymnasium, billiard room, and squash courts. Royal Selangor Golf Club Old Course is clearly amongst the elite of golfing in Kuala Lumpur, as well as being the oldest golf club in Malaysia.
