Manila is the capital city of the Philippines, located in South East Asia. An incredible 7,000 islands make up the country with the largest being Luzon, home Manila.  Thanks to the popularity of the locals along, with visiting golfers, the country has a fantastic selection of golf courses, especially around Manila.

The Philippines are most popular during the dry season, between November and April. Temperatures are high during March and April, so it’s best to travel during the cooler months of December to February.

Situated on Luzon Island, Manila is a mix of modern skyscrapers and Spanish colonial architecture.  The main airport and entry point to the Philippines is Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

The nightlife is varied from great bars and clubs, to casinos and theatres, some showing Broadway shows.

During the colonization period, the takeover of the Spaniards in the country led to the creation of the “Walled City” called Intramuros. Construction of the walls were built to prevent foreign invaders from crashing in.

Very challenging layout designed by Japanese golf Architect, Seiichi Inoue in the late 60s. At 7,163 yards,  the course feels even longer as many holes have elevated greens. Manila Golf and Country Club


The oldest and finest golf course in the country

Manila Golf and Country Club was named as the “oldest and finest golf course in the country” by local newspaper, Philippine Star.

In 1901, the first Manila Golf Club’s course was laid out in Caloocan. Then In 1949, the course was transferred to Makati, where shortly after World War II, it acquired a tract of land adjacent to Fort William Mckinley.

Sherwood Hills is one of three Jack Nicklaus signature golf courses in the country, and apparently it happens to be the Golden Bear’s favorite.

Located only a half hour outside Makati City, Sherwood Hills is not to be missed.

Nicklaus was in the country doing a site inspection of the construction of the two golf courses at Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club (both Nicklaus signatures) when Freddy Campos invited him out to Trece Martires, Cavite to check out another property they were in the midst of developing.

South Forbes Golf Club


The course was built in 2006. Relatively short in length as it just a par 67 and with seven par 3 holes, the course is by all means not easy to play as the layout was carved out of rolling country side with many holes laid out across hills and some chasms. What it lacks in length is fully made up with challenges off the tee and difficulties in going for the greens.

If you like hilly terrain, then this Greg Norman layout will not disappoint.

This all-weather golf course is located on hilly terrain, and was designed by golfing legend Greg Norman.

Construction began in 1996 and was completed four years later in 2000. Each hole has four sets of tees, and the yardage from the back tees is 6,997.

Being close to the centre of town, it is a popular choice for local golfers and tourists

Located around the corner from Resorts World Manila and very close to Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport, Villamor is a good 18-hole par 72 course.

Although a fairly flat layout, the 6,271 yards is still an exciting challenge with narrow fairways and a few water hazards to contend with.
