The Northeast of Thailand is also referred to Isaan (also Isan, Issan, I-san, or Isarn) and includes about a third of the Kingdom of Thailand. Golf in the northeastern provinces is generally less well known and less expensive than other parts of Thailand. Isaan has golf courses scattered around the region and located in each province.
Most golf courses are located or near major Isaan cities, Khon Kaen for example, has four 18-hole golf courses within 40 minutes from the city center. Singha Park and Dancoon are the two best and each has hosted Asian Tour events. Victory Park in Nong Kai near the Laos border has also played host to a number of regional golf events. Additionally, there is no shortage of challenging 9-hole courses in rural areas throughout Isaan.
Other than golf, Isaan is known for being a rural area where local people retain the original Thai way of life. Large open spaces with square rice fields and water buffalo are interspersed with huge mountain ranges. Isaan is bounded north and east by the Mekong River from Laos and southeast by Cambodia. Isaan is excellent for culture and nature-oriented golfers as great Khmer temples, archaeological ruins, and national parks can be visited and easily combined with golfing in Isaan.

Isaan is noted as the center of an age-old civilization dating back to prehistoric time and to the period when the Khmer people held away in the region. The Northeast’s ancient traditions and customs are still reflected in fairs and festivals found nowhere else in the country. These include the colorful Bun Bang Fai (rocket festival), the Candle Procession and the Wax Castle Festival. The most well-known local products of the Northeast are silk, wicker ware, earthenware and edible items such as sausages, mangoes, Barbequed chicken and sticky rice.
While popular with local Thais, not many Thailand golf visitors know about golf in Isaan. Accommodation around Isaan is plentiful and ranges from inexpensive guest houses to 5-star hotels.
The Isaan golf courses are all set in natural surroundings. Daily flights from Bangkok are available to mall of the Isaan cities. Alternatively, the highway system around Isaan is well developed and one can drive among cities and to/from Bangkok in only a few hours.
