There are very few places on Earth where a round of golf feels like an expedition into a mythological landscape. The Ha Long Bay and Hai Phong region is exactly that. Just two hours east of Hanoi, this area is defined by thousands of towering limestone karsts rising dramatically from emerald waters. For decades, it has been a bucket-list destination for cruisers and sightseers, but recently, it has transformed into a world-class golf hub. With courses perched on cliffs overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage bay and layouts woven through coastal mangroves, the golf here is as visually staggering as it is challenging. If you want a golf holiday where the scenery competes with your swing for attention, this is the place.
The region offers a stunning mix of mountain, marshland, and true coastal links golf.
FLC Ha Long Bay Golf Club The UNESCO Panorama Perched high on a hill above the city, this course offers arguably the most spectacular views in all of Asian golf. From almost every hole, you can look down at the iconic limestone islands of Ha Long Bay. The layout is dramatic, featuring severe elevation changes, tight fairways, and fast, undulating greens.
The Par-3 12th hole. You tee off hitting straight toward the bay, making it one of the most photographed golf holes in Vietnam.
The 36-Hole Heavyweight Located on Vu Yen Island (reached by a short bridge or ferry), this massive 36-hole complex designed by IMG is a tale of two courses.
PGA Silk Path Dong Trieu Golf & Country Club The Hidden Gem Opened in 2025, this 27-hole facility designed by Sir Nick Faldo is the newest crown jewel between Hanoi and Ha Long Bay. Set against a backdrop of gentle hills and clear lakes, the course features Faldo’s signature strategic bunkering and unique “potato chip” undulating greens.
The PGA Academy. It is the first PGA of America Golf Academy in Vietnam, making it the perfect place to fine-tune your swing.
Dragon Golf Links (Hai Phong) The Norman Links Located on the Do Son peninsula, this 27-hole layout by Greg Norman is a true coastal links experience. Built on reclaimed land right at the mouth of the sea, the course is completely exposed to the elements.
The Ocean Holes. Holes 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, and 14 play directly parallel or perpendicular to the sea. When the wind blows, this course becomes a fierce, strategic test.
You are visiting one of the natural wonders of the world. Do not spend all your time in the clubhouse.
• Cha Muc (Grilled Squid Sausage):
Ha Long’s most famous dish. Hand-pounded fresh squid, fried until golden, and served with steamed rice rolls (Banh Cuon). It is an absolute must-try.
• Fresh Catch at Bai Chay:
Head to the seafood restaurants along the coast for fresh lobster, horseshoe crab, and oysters caught straight from the bay.
• Luxury Dining:
For a refined evening, visit the Soul Bowl for Asian fusion or Golden Ocean Seafood Restaurant for premium, live-tank dining.
• Overnight Bay Cruise:
The ultimate Ha Long experience. Board a luxury wooden junk boat (like Bhaya Cruises) for a 2-day trip to kayak through hidden lagoons, explore massive stalactite caves (like Sung Sot), and wake up to Tai Chi on the sundeck.
• Sun World Ha Long Complex:
Ride the Queen Cable Car across the bay to the massive Sun Wheel for a panoramic view of the region at sunset.
• Cat Ba Island:
Take a ferry to the largest island in the archipelago. Rent a scooter to explore the dense national park, which is home to the endangered white-headed langur monkey.
