This morning's itinerary includes a visit to the Treasury Museum, your primary source for understanding the evolution of Thai currency and its connection to the economic and social progress of the Northeastern Region and Khon Kaen specifically, from historical times to the present day. The building now housing the museum formerly served as the Bank of Thailand's Northeastern Region branch before being renovated by the Treasury Department. On the second floor, you'll find an extensive exhibition detailing the history of Khon Kaen. Please note that the museum is closed on Mondays.
Following this, you will proceed to Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon. This impressive 80-meter tall, 9-story chedi, constructed in the 1990s, is situated within the grounds of the Wang Nong Waeng royal temple, which dates back to 1793. Named after the Supanniga flower, Krua Supanniga by Khunyai first opened its doors in Khon Kaen in 2002. Spearheaded by Thanaruek (Eh) Laoraowirodge and his mother, the establishment was founded on the principle of preserving the authentic recipes of Eastern Thai cuisine passed down from his grandmother, Khunyai Somsie Jantra, and sharing this culinary heritage with those who crave genuine Eastern Thai flavors. A highly recommended dish is the chamuang pork, a tender stewed pork dish featuring the distinctively tart flavor of Chamuang leaves.
