June 2018 Edition

Dear Golf Travelers,

Welcome to the June 2018 edition of the Asian Golf Nation, the source for news breaking information about golf and golf travel in Asia. Also, unique golf playing tips for SE Asia’s tropical environment, announcements of special tours, updates on boutique golf tournaments for amateur golfers, and some interesting golf traveler feedback are all integral to today’s newsletter.

Summer 2018 in Northern Hemisphere will begin on Thursday, June 21. For us, it is the greenest season and the time for great golf, beautiful scenery, and to enjoy all of the Asian golf destinations at rates less than usual. Check out our special offers and golf packages, and you will see what I mean.

June is also tournament month. Thailand’s marquee golf event for amateur golfers, the Centara World Masters, is a sell-out for the fifth straight year. The Mercure Pattaya Two-Ball Tournament the week after also sold out. Thanks to those who registered. I look forward to seeing you at one or both events.

For those who could not make it, we have launched more boutique golf events which still have availability. September will see the Accor Vietnam World Masters and Mercure Pattaya Singles Week events. Then in October, the inaugural Shangri La Chaing Mai Two-Ball Championship comes to Chiang Mai. The uber-luxury Shangri-la Chiang Mai Resort will be the event host venue for the most elaborate event we have ever staged. This event will be hot! All tournament & event details are here.

While some say that Asia's incredible golf courses are the main attractions, its really the rich cultural experiences and very friendly locals encountered along the way that often leaves the fondest impressions. Just consider the caddie experience, and you will know what I mean.

Anyway, thanks to you, Golfasian remains Asia's top golf operator providing services centered around authentic golf experiences and great value. Your recognition of our quick responsiveness, impeccable attention to detail and tailor-made personalized service is what sets us apart.

Complete full-service itineraries created for your specific travel preferences, expectations, group size, and budgets are our specialty. Please contact us for a competitive quote.

Until the next newsletter, happy golfing and I hope to see you in Asia very soon!

GOLF NEWS FROM AROUND THE REGION

Vietnam

Great news for European golfers thinking about a Vietnam golf holiday! The central Vietnam government has decided to extend visa waivers for visitors from the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain until 2021. The maximum allowable stay is 15 days per entry, applicable to all kinds of passports and travel purposes. Currently, citizens from 17 countries can travel to Vietnam without visa’s, and more countries will be added to the list as Vietnam places more and more emphasis on tourism.

Hanoi, Vietnam

Welcome to Hilltop Valley Golf Club; a new 36-hole IMG designed golf course west of Hanoi in Hoa Binh province. Once opened later in the year, it will offer resort golf among breathtaking scenery of surrounding mountain ranges and the Da River valley. Eventual plans call for a new town with entertainment and commercial centers, hotels, villas, and resorts. The site looks phenomenal from the early construction photos, and Hilltop Valley will be another welcome addition to the Hanoi golf scene.

Krabi, Thailand

Anyone thinking about a Krabi holiday now has a golf course to play. Despite its strange name, and located in and around loads of palm trees, Hula Hula Golf Club has nothing else in common with Hawaii. The pseudo 18-hole layout comprises nine greens and nine fairways with two sets of tees. While not bad for a day off from the beach, Hula Hula can’t hold a candle to with the big named courses on Phuket.

Siem Reap, Cambodia

Rebuilding of the greens at Phokeethra Country Club are going well with new Tiff Eagle turf growing in now. Next up are new tee-to-green cart paths. The Siem reap course should be re-open for play by October, though there may be some delay to the clubhouse additions. Once back online, Siem Reap will have two quality courses (the other being Angkor Golf Resort) and become a much stronger golf destination overall.

GOLF DESTINATION REVIEW: Phuket

Phuket is Thailand’s biggest island and commonly referred to as the “Pearl of the Andaman”.

The island is blessed with magnificent coves and bays, clear waters and some of the world’s finest beaches. The best beaches and the most popular are on the west coast in the resorts of Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala, Surin Nai Harn, Bang Thao and Mai Khao.

Patong Beach is undoubtedly the epicenter of Phukets entertainment scene with its wealth of bars, clubs, live music and cabaret shows, but there is still plenty to discover in other areas such as Phuket Town with its Sino-Portuguese architecture, small bars, clubs and great Thai restaurants.

The island itself has eight golf courses with a variety of challenges to suit every golfer from the highly rated and spectacular Red Mountain, the championship test of Blue Canyon to the well manicured resort course of Laguna Phuket.

Another popular addition to the golfing scene in Phuket are the Golf Academies where you can learn to play golf in a relaxed atmosphere whether it’s on the range or a playing lesson with one of qualified PGA professionals.

Laguna Golf Phuket

Laguna Golf Phuket features a resort golf course with pleasant breezes from the Andaman Sea. The Phuket golf course not too demanding and reflects the natural beauty and tropical surroundings of Bang Tao Bay. Phuket Golf Laguna is set on a valley floor overlooked by low wooded hills and marsh lands. The Phuket golf course was re-designed in 2014 and now the Laguna Golf Phuket is more challenging.

Thailand's Rainy Season - How Does it Affect Our Golf?

Thailand’s rainy season runs from approximately May to November when it gives way to the cool season ending in the particular hot and humid month of April. Both terms are slightly misleading (we will deal with rainy) given Thailand has a tropical climate so temperatures are generally high throughout the year although the high ground in the north around Chiang Mai can produce genuinely frigid weather.
