Welcome...

...to the March edition of Asian Golf Insider.

Peak season continues across Asia, and this month we're heading north - exploring Ha Long Bay and Haiphong as one of Vietnam's most exciting emerging golf regions. Read on below...

The busiest months of the Asian golf calendar are well underway, with Golfasian guests currently enjoying carefully planned golf holidays across Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and beyond. Our teams across the region are fully in motion, and the feedback coming in has been outstanding.

We've just wrapped up the Philippines Golf Invitational, our first tournament of the 2026 season - a fantastic week of golf, camaraderie, and warm Filipino hospitality. Next up is the Amari Hua Hin Skins Golf Week, and our full 2026 event calendar is packed with golf weeks, tournaments, and hosted experiences throughout the year. Most events are already full or filling fast, but a few still have spots available - so if you've been thinking about joining one, now is the time to act.

In this March issue, we turn the spotlight on northern Vietnam's Ha Long and Haiphong golf region - a destination that combines dramatic mountain and coastal scenery with genuinely impressive courses like FLC Ha Long Bay Golf Club, Vinpearl Golf Hai Phong, and our Golf Course of the Month, Silk Path Dong Trieu Golf & Country Club. You'll find a destination overview, a feature interview with Silk Path's General Manager Masayuki Kobayashi, hotel highlights, hidden gems beyond the fairways, our featured tour package, and a staff profile introducing My Hua from our Vietnam team.

We're also proud to share that Asian Golf & More - Edition 4, our latest golf travel magazine, is now published and available to download for free. It's packed with destination features, course reviews, and travel inspiration from across the region.

And finally, some exciting news. Golfasian has once again been recognized at the World Golf Awards, receiving nominations for World's Best Golf Tour Operator 2026, Asia's Best Golf Tour Operator 2026, and Best Inbound Golf Tour Operator for Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam. These awards are decided by public vote - and we'd truly appreciate your support. Every single vote counts, and it means the world to our team of over 100 staff across Asia. Voting takes just a moment, and you can cast your vote here.

As always, whether you're travelling with us right now, planning your next trip, or exploring Asia golf for the first time, our team is here to help. With peak-season availability tightening, we recommend booking early to secure preferred courses, hotels, and travel dates.

We hope you enjoy this month's edition.

DESTINATION OF THE MONTH: Ha Long & Haiphong

Why Ha Long & Haiphong Should Be on Every Golfer’s Radar

Few places in Asia match the combination of jaw-dropping scenery and genuinely good golf you'll find around Ha Long and Haiphong. Think limestone karsts rising from emerald waters, mountain backdrops framing your fairway, and coastal breezes that make you rethink every club choice.
In Ha Long, you're playing within sight of one of the world's great natural wonders. In Haiphong, Vietnam's bustling port city, you get energy, great food, and easy access to everything. Together, they give you atmosphere and convenience - no compromises.

The course lineup is seriously impressive. FLC Ha Long Bay Golf Club offers stunning ocean views directly over the UNESCO-listed bay from its elevated Schmidt-Curley design. Vinpearl Golf Hai Phong is a 36-hole island complex - one of Vietnam's largest - set where three rivers meet the East Sea. Silk Path Dong Trieu Golf & Country Club, designed by Sir Nick Faldo, delivers championship golf against a beautiful mountain backdrop. Add in Dragon Golf Links, a Greg Norman links-style layout along the Gulf of Tonkin, and Tuan Chau Golf Resort with its rolling links feel right on Ha Long Bay, and you've got variety that rivals any region in Southeast Asia.

Conditioning is strong across the board, caddies are excellent, and nothing is far apart - perfect for a 4 to 6 round trip without spending half the day in a van.

Getting here is easy. Hanoi connects internationally across Europe, Australia, and Asia, with new highways cutting transfer times to Ha Long and Haiphong significantly.

Accommodation has caught up fast. Bay-view hotels in Ha Long, city-style comfort and international dining in Haiphong - or combine both for a change of pace between rounds.

Then there's the value. Compared to more established golf destinations like Bangkok, Hua Hin, or Danang, northern Vietnam delivers comparable course quality and service at noticeably better rates. For seasoned golf travellers looking for somewhere fresh, this ticks every box.

And here's the thing - it's still relatively undiscovered. The course portfolio is growing, international attention is building, but for now, it still feels like your own find.

COURSE OF THE MONTH:
Silk Path Dong Trieu Golf and Country Club

If you haven't heard of Silk Path Dong Trieu yet, you will. Opened in 2024 in Quang Ninh Province, this Sir Nick Faldo design is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about courses in northern Vietnam.

The 27-hole layout stretches over 7,400 yards of rolling terrain framed by mountain ridgelines and ancient pine forest. Faldo's philosophy is stamped all over it - this is a course that rewards placement over power, with 91 well-positioned bunkers, thoughtful elevation changes, and greens with subtle breaks that demand your full attention. Signature holes 6, 7, 13, and 15 are standouts for both challenge and sheer visual drama.

As GM Masayuki Kobayashi puts it: "It doesn't reward aggression for its own sake. It rewards strategic judgment." That balance between risk and restraint gives Silk Path its personality - and keeps golfers coming back.

Located 90 kilometres from Hanoi and within easy reach of Ha Long Bay, it's a natural addition to any northern Vietnam golf itinerary.

ACCOMMODATION OF THE MONTH:
Hyatt Place Ha Long Bay, Bai Chay

Ha Long's First Hyatt - and a Smart Base for Golf in Northern Vietnam

For a golf holiday in Ha Long and Haiphong, your base camp matters almost as much as the courses you play. Opened in 2025 as the first Hyatt Place in Vietnam, this brand-new hotel sits right in the heart of Bai Chay with 161 modern rooms, bay views from private balconies, and the kind of reliable comfort that makes a multi-round golf trip feel effortless.

It brings something the region has been missing: a well-known international brand with consistent standards, friendly English-speaking staff, and all the things travelling golfers appreciate - comfortable beds after an early tee time, a solid breakfast, a 24-hour fitness centre, and an outdoor infinity pool overlooking Ha Long Bay for winding down after your round. Guest reviews since opening have been overwhelmingly positive, with words like "spotlessly clean," "beautifully designed," and "genuinely warm staff" coming up again and again.

The location works well for golfers. FLC Ha Long Bay Golf Club and Tuan Chau Golf Resort are a short drive away, while Vinpearl Golf Hai Phong and Silk Path Dong Trieu are comfortably reachable for day trips. Restaurants, waterfront promenades, and the marina are all within easy reach on foot.

Opt for a bay-view room if you can - waking up to Ha Long's limestone karsts before heading to the first tee is a pretty special way to start a golf day.

International five-star standards, a prime location, excellent service, and rates that represent outstanding value. Exactly the kind of base camp a well-planned golf holiday deserves.

Beyond the Fairways: Ha Long & Haiphong's Quiet Side

Ha Long and Haiphong have plenty to keep golfers busy between rounds - but the most rewarding experiences tend to be the ones you won't find in a guidebook.

Lan Ha Bay by Kayak

Everyone knows Ha Long Bay. Fewer visitors discover Lan Ha Bay, its quieter neighbour to the south, accessible via Cat Ba Island. The limestone karst scenery is essentially the same - towering formations rising from emerald water - but with a fraction of the boat traffic. Kayaking here is the real draw. You paddle through narrow openings into hidden lagoons enclosed by cliffs, glide past floating fishing villages where families still live and work on the water, and pull up on secluded sandy beaches with nobody else around. It's the kind of experience that stays with you long after the golf tan fades. Half-day and full-day trips run from Cat Ba, or ask your Golfasian concierge to arrange a private excursion.

Haiphong's Crab Noodle Soup Trail

If you only eat one thing in Haiphong, make it bánh đa cua - the city's legendary crab noodle soup, recently named among the world's best noodle soups by TasteAtlas. The dish features distinctive reddish-brown rice noodles with a chewy texture you won't find anywhere else in Vietnam, swimming in a rich crab broth topped with crab cakes, pork wrapped in betel leaves, fish cake, and a heap of fresh morning glory. Locals say you have to eat it in Haiphong to understand why it's special - and they're right. Head to one of the old-school spots on Cau Dat Street, pull up a plastic stool, and order a bowl. At around $2, it might be the best meal of your trip.

Cat Ba Island's Viet Hai Village

For a genuinely off-the-grid experience, take the trail or boat to Viet Hai, a small village tucked inside Cat Ba National Park and accessible only by sea or a jungle trek. Electric carts and bicycles carry you through quiet countryside surrounded by limestone peaks and dense forest. There are no crowds, no souvenir shops - just a working village, rice paddies, and an unhurried pace of life that feels a world away from the golf course. Several Lan Ha Bay cruise itineraries include Viet Hai as a stop, making it easy to combine with a kayaking day.

Haiphong's Colonial Quarter on Foot

Haiphong is sometimes described as a mini Hanoi from several decades ago - wide French-colonial boulevards, a beautifully preserved 1904 Opera House, and sprawling local markets without a tourist bus in sight. An early evening stroll through the colonial quarter around Dien Bien Phu Street takes you past elegant old villas, the city's first museum housed in a 1919 colonial building, and pavement cafes where locals gather for iced coffee and people-watching. It's a completely different energy from Ha Long - grittier, more authentic, and genuinely interesting.

Dau Island and the Hundred-Year Lighthouse

A short 15-minute boat ride from Do Son, on Haiphong's coast, brings you to Dau Island - a small, forested island home to ancient banyan trees estimated at 400 to 700 years old. At the island's highest point stands Hon Dau Lighthouse, one of Vietnam's five most famous, with over a century of history guiding ships through the Gulf of Tonkin. It's peaceful, photogenic, and completely uncrowded - ideal for a rest-day morning trip before an afternoon tee time.

Ha Long and Haiphong reward curiosity. Step just slightly beyond the golf courses and tourist circuits and you'll find local food, untouched coastline, and moments of real quiet that often become the most talked-about part of the trip.

Golf Package of the Month -
Northern Vietnam Golf & Cruise Experience

This is the Vietnam golf trip that shows you a completely different side of Vietnam golf. No beach resorts, no Danang strip - instead, mountain-framed fairways, Hanoi's thousand years of history, and a cruise through one of the most spectacular natural landscapes on earth.

The tour starts in Hanoi with a day to explore the capital - the Ho Chi Minh Complex, the atmospheric Old Quarter, the Temple of Literature. Then the golf begins. Thanh Lanh Valley Golf & Resort, a Nick Faldo design nestled in the Tam Dao Mountains, plays through a stunning valley with holes stretching out on a peninsula over a lake. Next up is Sky Lake Resort & Golf Club, a dramatic 36-hole complex just 45 minutes from central Hanoi that's been recognized as one of Vietnam's best championship layouts.

From there, the trip shifts to Ha Long Bay. You'll board a cruise through the UNESCO-listed karst landscape - limestone towers rising from emerald water, hidden grottoes, floating villages - with overnight options ranging from intimate 4-star junks to premium heritage cruises. After a night on the water, you check into your Ha Long hotel before the grand finale: FLC Ha Long Bay Golf Club, a Schmidt-Curley design perched above the bay with views that make it genuinely difficult to concentrate on your scorecard.

Everything is taken care of - hotels, green fees, caddies, private transfers, a 24/7 golf hotline, and local support throughout. And because every Golfasian tour is fully customizable, you can add extra rounds, swap courses, extend the cruise, or build in rest days to suit your group.

For golfers who've done Thailand or central Vietnam and want something fresh, this is it. Dramatic golf, rich culture, a world-class natural wonder - and a price point that might surprise you.

MEET YOUR GM -  Meet Masayuki Kobayashi – Bringing Silk Path Dong Trieu’s Vision to Life

Tucked in the mountains of Quang Ninh province, Silk Path Dong Trieu Golf & Country Club is one of northern Vietnam's most compelling new golf destinations - a Nick Faldo design framed by ancient pine forests and rolling highland terrain. It's not on the coast. It's not next door to your hotel. And that, according to General Manager Masayuki Kobayashi, is exactly the point.

Kobayashi brings more than two decades in luxury hospitality to a property that's still being shaped - and for him, that was the appeal. A Japanese-born GM now leading a Vietnamese team, he's building something that blends quiet discipline with genuine warmth, on a course that rewards thinking golfers over big hitters.

We sat down with him to talk about what drew him here, how the course reveals your character, which hole keeps him honest, and why the drive inland from Ha Long Bay isn't a detour - it's a reset. For golfers considering northern Vietnam for their next trip, this is someone worth listening to.

MEET OUR TEAM - My Hua

My Hua's path to golf travel started on the front desk at InterContinental Danang and continued through four years in operations at ICS Travel Group. That hospitality background - understanding what makes a guest experience work from the ground up - is exactly what she brings to her role managing supplier contracts across Vietnam for Golfasian.

With a Bachelor of Arts in English and a genuine love of travel, she's on a personal mission to visit every city in Vietnam, camera always close by. Golf has widened that map considerably, introducing her to new destinations and cultures along the way. She's also a keen listener - one of the things she enjoys most about the job is hearing guests' stories about courses they've played and places they've been.

Early mornings usually start with a jog through quiet streets before the city wakes up. And if you need a dinner recommendation, ask her - Vietnamese and Thai food are her go-to, the spicier the better.
