Asian Golf Travel Nation - March 2013

Facebook Like Button    Google +1 Button

Dear Golf Travelers,

Golf in AsiaGreetings from Asia and welcome to the latest issue of the Asian Golf Nation, the source for news breaking information about golf in Asia.

The year is moving fast as the season changes from winter to spring. For many of you, this means it's time to dust off the clubs and start practicing. In Asia, the weather is already warm, so what better way to start off your golf year than to get some early rounds here. Most of the main golf tourists gone home and the courses and resorts are less crowded and lower priced.

On our side its tournament month as we are hosting 4 major events. The 3rd All Nations Cup in Pattaya and Bangkok, the 2nd Hua Hin Amateur Week, 4th Pattaya Amateur Week, and 3rd World Golf Schools Challenge in Hua Hin are all scheduled and waiting for emerging winners. For those of you signed-up shoot well and have a great tournament. For those not signed up, don't worry our next events are schedule for July and August when our amateur series heads to Phuket and Cambodia for the Phuket and Cambodia Amateur Weeks, respectively. For registration and tournament information please contact us.

As always there are many golf 'happenings' around the region so with that, I invite you to enjoy this edition of the Asian Golf Travel Nation.

Golf news from around the region:

Thailand
*Suwan Golf & Country ClubBangkok, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Pattaya, & Phuket: It's official! In 2012, Thailand reached 22 million tourists of which 750 thousand were golfers. The primary contributor to this record shattering result was the prevalence of world-class golf courses and resorts, local peace and stability, global economic recovery, and lack of any natural disasters. Thailand again is poised to welcome a record number of golfers in 2013 as new golf courses come online and existing facilities are upgraded to 5* standards. My advice is to take advantage of low season specials starting in April to see what the entire buzz is about.

Malaysia
*Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club Kuala Lumpur: Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club (KLGCC) winner of 'Best Course in Malaysia' for its championship West Course and the first runner-up for 'Best Clubhouse in Asia Pacific' is closed this month for the European and Asian Tours co-sanctioned Malaysia Open. This year's field includes Padraig Harrington, Charl Schwartzel and Luke Donald. The West Course is celebrated for its pristine playing conditions and challenging layout and is a must-play for anyone golfing in Kuala Lumpur.

Laos
*Long Vien Golf ClubVientiane: The first 18 holes at Long Vien Golf Club are open for play. The Long Thanh Golf Club Vietnam sister club brings the number of Vientiane's courses to six. Although still needing more time to grow in and bring the service level up to par with other nearby countries, golf in Laos already makes an interesting choice for those looking to blaze the trail of undiscovered golf destinations.

With that I would like to once again thank those of you who have golfed with us recently, it was nice seeing you and I hope your trip was memorable one.

Remember, while the offerings are many, the choice is yours, and golf in Asia is waiting for you.
Whatever your budget, preferred style of travel, or how small/large your group, we are glad to work with you and suggest a golf package that meets all of your needs.

Until the next newsletter, happy golfing and I hope to see YOU in the area very soon!

- Chiang Mai Golf News & Updates

Chiang Mai Golf News & UpdatesAfter a few down years due to the economy, political unrest and floods, Chiang Mai tourism bounced back stronger than ever for the 2012 / 2013 High Season, with hotels and golf courses largely fully booked from mid-December through February.  As a result many golfers are now asking when would be a good time for both weather and avoiding the crowds?  I like to suggest the 'shoulder' seasons just before and after High Season.  The weather is still pretty good (though April is rather warm) and the courses are MUCH less crowded.

- Featured Golf Course - Chiangmai Highlands Golf & Spa

Chiang Mai HighlandsThe Chiang Mai Highlands Golf Club opened in 2005 and significantly added to the quality of Chiang Mai’s golf courses. Soon thereafter in 2007, Chiang Mai Highlands Golf & Spa Resort was voted #3 for "Best New Course in Asia" by Asian Golf Monthly.

The drive to the course from Chiang Mai city leads through exceptionally beautiful landscape, in eastern direction along extensive rice fields into the mountains. The Chiang Mai Highlands golf course is built on a 'power spot' - the hermitage of Kuba Sivichai (the revered monk who founded the famous temple on Doi Suthep). This very special site is breathtaking in every direction and literally tingles with an energetic aliveness. Its profound tranquility, high elevation, cool climate, fresh air, pure water, and fertile soil, form the perfect place to sculpt a living golf treasure.

- Featured Hotel - The Chedi

The Chedi THE CHEDI Chiang Mai is an 84 room hotel, spa and restaurant located in the heart of central Chiang Mai. THE CHEDI is situated on the banks of the Mae Ping River, within walking distance from the famous night markets and 15 minutes or 6 kilometers from Chiang Mai International Airport.

The site of the hotel is the compound of the former British Consulate in Chiang Mai, within which the main Consulate building, dating from the 1920's, has been retained and integrated within the hotel design.
The design intention of the scheme was to combine a city location with the atmosphere of a resort hotel, together with the integration of the existing colonial house, site and hotel using a contemporary interpretation of traditional Thai materials.

- Golf Travel Testimonials

Hi Ian,

We are all just about recovered from what was an epic tour so I had to drop you a line of thanks.

The hotel was in a great location, with the rooms clean and well appointed, in the end I think only one of the party got an upgrade but that doesn't matter. Your on the ground team were really helpful and special thanks to Rocky who ferried us about and helped with other matters very efficiently.

We enjoyed all the courses we played but both at Blue Canyon, Loch Palms and Red Mountain were our firm favourites, with the latter being everyone's winner. Truly a spectacular track, great caddies etc etc. You know all this of course!

Ian on behalf of all the tourists we'd like to thank you and your team and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Many Thanks

Cameron B.

Airlines For A Thailand Golf Holiday

EmiratesNot a day goes by where Thailand golf travelers ask me the best way to get to their Thailand golf destination.

These days for international flights into and out of Thailand, I am partial to the carries from the Middle East for several reasons.

  1. Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar all have convenient flight schedules from practically every major European, American, and Australian hub city.
  2. Luggage allowances are generally more than the Asian national carriers and golf bags may even be carried for free, depending on your class of service.
  3. The airfares via the Middle East to Thailand are some of the lowest in the world.
  4. On board food, entertainment, and service are all world class

- Golfing Tips by Ian Morgan - Heat & Exposure on your Golf Holiday

The temperatures in Thailand do get extremely hot, especially if you are playing in the middle of the day so covering up on the fairways is essential to avoid discomfort or in extreme cases, heat stroke. Wear a hat or visor and even make use of your umbrella as well as a strong sun block for your protection. Carry a small towel and using absorbent wrist bands are also useful tips for your comfort. Your hands sweat too and often an all - weather glove is a lot more useful than the leather gloves that often have to be changed every 3 or 4 holes.
