Welcome to the July 2023 issue of the Asian Golf Traveler, the source for information about golf travel in Asia. Also, unique golf playing tips for Indochina's tropical environment, announcements of golf travel promotions, and our latest subscription offer are all integral parts of today's newsletter.

As an American living in Asia, people often ask me if I miss the USA. For the most part, the answer is no. However, one thing I do miss is American Independence Day, or the 4th of July. Great cookouts, a baseball game, or the annual family trip to the lakehouse can't be duplicated outside of the USA. To all my fellow Americans, a happy 247th birthday this July 4th. Have a great weekend, on and off the golf course.

This time of the year, most tropical destinations, like Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phnom Penh, are in their rainier months. Rain means a heavy downpour around 3:00 PM each day. While rain and golf generally don't work together, the afternoon showers in the tropics only last an hour or so. At other times of the day, the skies are sunny, and the golf courses are inviting for play. Green fees are also at their yearly lowest, which are well-received by visiting golfers.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Centara World Masters and Pattaya 2-Ball Tournaments; both were great successes. Next up is our new Invitational Series in Phuket. Follow our updates by bookmarking this page for our ongoing Asian golf tournament calendar. Each golf tournament allows amateur golfers to participate in professionally organized golf events that challenge one's golf skills in a fun setting and provide excellent networking and new friendship-building opportunities.

Finally, at Golfasian, we believe that not all quality experiences must be expensive to be authentic. Just the opposite is true. Our team understands that matching your interests and budgets to inspirational golfing destinations matters most when creating a trip that works for you and will get you to golf holiday perfection. DESTINATION OF THE MONTH: Hanoi
Hanoi is Vietnam’s capital and the country’s second largest city. The city is a fascinating blend of east and west, with Chinese influence from centuries of dominance and French design from its colonial past. When Hanoi opened its door to the outside world following the adoption of the 1986 reforms, golf remained a sport tagged with a ‘four-letter’ word. Party officials frowned on golf as an irrelevant bourgeois indulgence. Now however, golf is enjoyed by locals and visiting golfers alike. Hanoi sports many championship courses the best of which include Van Tri, Sky Lake, Tam Dao, Chi Linh Star, and Kings Island.

The best golf weather in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay is in Fall (September to November) and Spring (March to May) when it is cool with less humidity. Summer (June through August) is quite hot and Winter (December to February) tends to be foggy with light mist, However, golf can be played year round in Hanoi. Combined with a Ha Long Bay excursion, Hanoi makes for a top international golf destination in its own right.

COURSE OF THE MONTH:
Thanh Lanh Valley Golf & Resort

Located at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level, Thanh Lanh Valley Golf & Resort has a cool climate all year round, with an average temperature of 18-25 degrees Celsius. Perfect golf conditions make the two-hour drive from Hanoi worth the effort. A bypass road connecting Tam Dao, Thanh Lanh, and Dai Lai golf areas makes several excellent golf clubs easily reachable. Thanh Lanh Valley Golf & Resort sometimes is referred to by its second name, Serena Valley Resort Golf & Club.

Thanh Lanh Golf Club is a Vietnam masterpiece of famous designer Sir Nick Faldo. Nick Faadlo and his team incorporated the local natural terrain of Thanh Lanh Lake and the surrounding valley of the Tam Dao mountains. At Thanh Lanh, golfers play distinct sections, including water surrounded, hillside, parkland, and a short section of Links golf. A peninsula over Thanh Lanh Lake houses the most specular holes. Returning nines both play out and back and share in the beauty of the site. The finishing holes play along the lake's shoreline to the clubhouse with a magnificent mountain backdrop.

ACCOMMODATION OF THE MONTH:
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi

Accommodations for golf visitors in Hanoi do not get any better than the legendary Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. The French colonial-style building has stood proudly in the Old Quarter since 1901. Located in the heart of downtown Hanoi, the hotel has a rich history and a century-long tradition of welcoming ambassadors, writers, heads of state and entrepreneurs. Some of Hanoi’s best French food served at Le Beaulieu. Spices Garden (Vietnamese) and Angelina (Italian) round of the Hanoi hotels fine restaurants. The excellent Le Spa du Metropole is also available for visiting golfers. The Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Hotel is a unique blend of Vietnamese hospitality and European opulence.
