The Khao Yai National Park is the oldest and most famous in Thailand, some even say one of the finest in Asia. Covering an area of more than 2000 square km. on a forest covered mountain plateau it comprises several hills, two major rivers - Lam Takhong and Nakhon Nayok - some 20 waterfalls and a wide array of plant and animal life. It stretches into four different provinces; Nakhon Rachasima (Korat), Nakhon Nayok, Sara Buri and Prachin Buri, and is regarded as the gateway to the North East - Isaan - from the Central Plains. You can easily reach the park by ground transport from Bangkok within 3,5 hours.
Some of the abundant wildlife includes over 300 species of birds, almost 70 different mammals and 2500 plant types. Animals like monkeys (including gibbons), deers, hornbills, porcupines and bats are everyday sights, but you may still find wild elephants, Asian jackals, bears and even tigers and leopards in these forests. The highest mountain peak is Khao Rom, 1351 meters high, many other tops reach around 1000 m.
Khao Yai is a great place to spend some days, as it offers many different sights and tour options.
